How To Clean A Wall Mirror? Want to know how to keep your mirror beautiful and gleaming? Here’s our how-to guide.

Keeping wall mirrors sparkling clean may seem like hassle, but it is not difficult to keep a mirror shining, especially if done regularly. Follow our guide on how to clean a wall mirror and you’ll be amazed how new your mirror looks.

What you need to clean a wall mirror

  • Damp cloth or wet wipes
  • Clean paint brush
  • Microfibre cloth
  • Vinegar solution or
  • Glass cleaner
  • Cotton swabs
  • Vacuum

What is dust?

Dust is made of fine particles of solid matter. Dust generally consists of particles in the atmosphere that come from various sources. Dust in the home and office environment contain small amounts of human and animal hairs, human skin cells, textile fibbers, paper fibres, plant pollen, minerals from outdoor soil and many other particles that can be found in the local environment.

When you have your windows and doors open, you also become exposed to road dust. Dust kicked up by vehicles traveling on the roads consists of deposits of vehicle exhausts and industrial exhausts, particles from tire and brake wear and dust from paved roads. Road dust may be suppressed by a mechanical method like street sweepers, which are equipped with vacuum cleaners.

Dust control is the suppression of solid dust particles with diameters less than 500 micrometers. Dust poses a serious health threat to children, those with respiratory illnesses and the elderly. Sadly, dust is part of our life and house dust can become airborne easily. Care is required when removing dust to avoid the dust becoming airborne. Some dusting techniques may just move the dust from one area to another. Yet the goal should be to catch the dust particles and completely remove them. Products like Pledge cleaner are specifically designed to remove dust by trapping it with sticky chemicals. Modern vacuum cleaners can be effective in removing dust if the vacuum is regularly emptied and the filters changed.

Cleaning a mirror with a decorative frame

Regular cleaning is needed to keep the mirrored frame in top condition. A wall mirror with a decorative frame will over time hold a lot of dust. With moisture in the air and dust falling daily, the dust sits on dust, the dust then becomes harder to remove.

  1. Using wet wipes or a damp cloth, wipe the top part of the frame where most of the dust would have accumulated.
  2. With a new and clean paint brush work from the top to the bottom, brushing lightly over the frame to unsettle and brush away the dust.
  3. Using the hand brush attachment on your vacuum and the correct setting, vacuum the frame. This will remove the loose dust and remove any stubborn dust.
  4. Clean the corners and crevices of the frame with cotton swabs dipped in a cleaning solution.
  5. With a feather duster, dust the mirrored glass in downwards strokes. This will remove the light moveable dust from the mirrored glass. Vacuum the feather duster after.
  6. Finally, use either a vinegar solution or a glass cleaning solution and spray a clean lint free cloth. Then clean the glass in circular motions from the top down. Regularly turn the cloth and finish by using a dry part of the cloth, to buff the glass dry.
  7. Dust the furniture and vacuum the floor around the mirror.

Cleaning a frameless mirror

A frameless mirror is easier to clean but never use a cleaning solution that contains alkali or acids; these are abrasive and can damage the surface.

  1. Using wet wipes or a damp cloth, wipe the top part of the frame where most of the dust would have accumulated.
  2. Find a new and clean paint brush, work from the top down, brushing lightly over the any bevelled edges of the mirror. This will unsettle and brush away the dust.
  3. With a feather duster, dust the mirrored glass in downwards strokes. This will remove the light moveable dust from the mirrored glass. Vacuum the feather duster after.
  4. Finally, use either a vinegar solution or a glass cleaning solution and spray a clean lint free cloth. Then clean the glass in circular motions from the top down. Regularly turn the cloth and finish by using a dry part of the cloth, to buff the glass dry.
  5. Dust the furniture and vacuum the floor around the mirror.

Cleaning gilded frames

Gilt framed mirrors are beautiful but are also fragile. To clean a gilded framed mirror, proper treatment and solutions will be needed. If you do not have the full knowledge and experience of cleaning this type of frame then be very careful. Use the barest minimum of moisture and no commercial cleaning solutions because they usually contain a variety of chemicals. Always test on the least prominent part of the frame.

How To Clean A Wall Mirror?

Gently use a fine clean paint brush to lightly dislodge the dust particles. For stubborn dust areas, use a white clean cotton cloth, cool water and cotton swabs. Wet the swabs slightly, but then dab them on a dry cloth to ensure that there is no excess moisture. Very carefully, use the damp swabs to capture the dust from the crevices of the frame. If a wet cloth is needed, use a little water, but once again dab the cloth dry to ensure that there is no excess moisture. Work gently on the stubborn dust areas.

Cleaning acrylic mirrors

Glass-free mirrors are popular. Made from mirrored acrylic, they are very lightweight, shatter-resistant, and come in a variety of colors. They are an excellent option for a shower room, to be used as part of displays, or in children’s rooms. Acrylic mirrors are best cleaned using a cloth and warm soapy water or with an anti-static polish cleaner, sprayed onto the cloth. Avoid using glass cleaners on acrylic mirrors.

A natural cleaning solution – Vinegar & water solution

  • Clean empty spray bottle
  • White vinegar
  • Water

Make up a 50:50 ratio solution of part white vinegar and part cold water. Do not spray direct onto the glass. The liquid will easily run down between the frame and the glass. This can lead to “black edge” as the surface becomes compromised and the copper and silver coatings oxidize. Spray onto a microfibre cloth and clean the glass from the top down. Turn the cloth regularly, then continue with circular motions to buff the glass dry. Stand back and see your wall mirror shine!
