Soraya – The Name and the Business
The Name – Getting Down to Business
Many times I have been asked about the name behind my business and the meaning to my name, ‘Soraya’. In the following blog I hope to provide some incite into the establishment of Soraya Interiors.
The History and Meaning
Soraya is a feminine name of Persian origin and means gem or ‘princess’. Princess Soraya of Iran was queen and second wife to Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. She was born 22 June 1932 into a family that had long been involved in the Iranian government. Raised in Berlin (Germany) and Isfahan (Iran) then educated in Switzerland and London where she studied the English language, Queen Soraya later became an actress. Princess Soraya married on 12 February 1951 and being a woman of natural beauty and glamour, her wedding dress enhanced her beauty more. A soft silver lame gown studded with pearls and trimmed with elegant feathers, designed by the much loved Christian Dior! Unable to produce an heir the couple divorced April 1958. After her divorce she moved to France were Queen Soraya launched a brief career as a film actress, for which she was own by her first name ‘Soraya’. Queen Soraya died in Paris France 26 October 2001 at the age of 69.
My mother named me Soraya after befriending an adopted child called Soraya who lived in her street when she was young. Liking the name my mother researched its meaning and use. With learning much about Queen Soraya, I was then named Soraya Louise. Being a strong but elegant feminine name I decided it would be a good brand name for my business; ‘ Soraya Interiors’.
At present we sell wide range of wall mirrors of various styles, sizes and colours but are looking to expand in time into many other home interior accessories.
My inspiration to work with home interiors came from watching many episodes of Kirstie’s Allsopp’s and Phil’s Spencer’s production of Location Location Location which was first aired in May 2000. Following its success Kristie went on to produce Kirstie’s Homemade Home in 2009 (as well as many other things.) Watching her transform properties to become homes with the use of homemade or UK made products inspired me to want to help transform houses to stunning homes with affordable accessories like wall mirrors! Mirrors have the ability to enhance a rooms light and the feeling of space, so is a good choice when purchasing home accessories.
In 2008 after completing a short course in Croydon, London I became a picture framer. I enjoyed the challenge of transforming a lonely scene or loved object into a finished piece of art. Most of all I took pleasure in helping my clients achieve the feeling of space and light in a room with the use of wall mirrors. I would either advise on the frame moulding to buy then make the frame and insert the mirror or I would make a bespoke frame from a wood of their choice, finished in a way to complement their home interior.
